Mrs. Dale, 73 Ottumwa Hit on Sidewalk
Victim suffers ruptered stomach in accident on North Jefferson Street, Ottumwa.
Injuries sustained while she was struck by a bicycle while walking on North Jefferson Street Sunday night proved fatal to 73 year old Lavina J. Dale; 517 North Jefferson; died at Ottumwa hospital today.
The woman was a long time resident of Wapello County.
Physicians said that death was caused by a ruptured stomach. She also suffered bruises about the head and body.
A report made to police headquarters stated that the elderly victim was knocked down by a bicycle ridden by miss Margaret Rudd 14, negro; daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rudd 710 Norris Street.The girl told Police Chief Wilbourn M. Hicks that the mishap occurred on the sidewalk in front of 526 North Jefferson Street about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. She said it was getting dark and she did not see the woman until it was too late to avoid hitting her. Two other girls were riding on another bicycle nearby.
Mrs. Dale, witnesses said, was en route to visit neighbors at the time. The neighbors were sitting on their porch and saw the accident.
County Coroner John Drake was investigating the case further today.
Born Near Blakesburg
Mrs. Dale was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Dorothy and was born May 1, 1864, near Blakesburg. She spent her entire life in this county.
She was a member of the Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church and of the Royal Neighbors Lodge.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Barker, with whom she lived; a sister, Mrs. Myria Wintermote, Douglas, Wyo; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son.
The body was removed to the Johnson Funeral Chapel pending completion of funeral
arrangements.
