Mrs. A. M. Bartlett, Hurt Nearly A Month Ago, Dies
Well Known Ottumwa Woman Unconscious Since December 14.
Mrs. Arthur M. Bartlett, 45, of 525 N. Green St., died at 8:50 PM Thursday at the Mahaska County hospital, Oskaloosa, as a result of injuries sustained in an auto crash Saturday, December 14, 1935 between Oskaloosa and Ottumwa. Mrs. Bartlett was taken to the hospital after a car in which she, S. C. Bartlett and Elizabeth Ann Bartlett, the latter's daughter, were riding, collided with a car driven by H. S. Hoover, Oskaloosa route 4. She never regained consciousness. Elizabeth Ann was also injured in the accident, but not seriously.
Second Bartlett Death
The Ottumwans were returning from Des Moines where they had taken Mrs. S. C. Bartlett for hospital treatment. Mrs. S. C. Bartlett died January 3 of pneumonia while in Des Moines. Monday, January 6, Mrs. A. M. Bartlett underwent an operation. Until Wednesday she seemed to improve, it was said, but sank rapidly into relapse. She was suffering from a skull fracture and a subsequent pressure on the brain. She was the former Jesse Blanche Akers, daughter of Thomas M. and Clara E. Akers of Decatur City. She was born September 22, 1890, on a farm near Decatur City. She entered nurses training at the Ottumwa hospital here in 1911 and was graduated in 1914. She was on private nursing duty until 1918. With Miss Martha Bell and Miss Hazel Ogle she went into service as a war nurse, serving two months at Camp Mills, New York, during the influenza epidemic.
Served Overseas
In her overseas service she was stationed at a hospital in Brest, Nevers and Chaumont, France, the last named town the general headquarters of Gen. Pershing. On October 16, 1919, she was married to Arthur M. Bartlett and Ottumwa and is made her home here since. Surviving are her husband, Arthur M. Bartlett, well known Iowa amateur golfer and court reporter, and her daughter, Patricia Ann, both at home; three sisters, Mrs. John L. Gardner and Mrs. E. H. Muse, both of Des Moines, and Mrs. H. C. Farlow of Kansas City, Missouri; four brothers, T. W., D. L., W. H., And D. G. Akers all of Decatur City, and her mother, Mrs. Clara E. Akers of Decatur City. Her father, Thomas M., one sister and three brothers preceded her in death. The body will remain at the Lester Jay funeral home pending completion of funeral arrangements.
