Body of Robert Davis due from Philippines
Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. John C. Davis, 429 N. Clay St, that the body of their son will arrive Thursday afternoon in Ottumwa. Their son was a Technician Fourth Grade. Robert E. Davis killed in action at Legaspi, Albay Province, Luzon, Philippines Islands. His death occurred April 2, 1945. Surviving are his parents at home, brothers, John C. Davis Jr., Marengo, and Paul F. Davis, Ottumwa; and his grandmother, Mrs. James S. Bruder of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Davis was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. He was graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1940 and attended Iowa Success School. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. After high school, he worked for the machinery branch, OPA, in Washington, DC and then returned to the Milwaukee Railroad as a locomotive fireman in Ottumwa. Sgt. Davis was inducted January 29, 1943 and went to Camp Dodge, and then Camp Howze, Texas. He was an aviation cadet for a time and then returned to the 86th Division. October 29, 1944, he went overseas with Headquarters Company, 158th Infantry, Regimental Combat Team. He was wounded in action, January 19, 1945 during the attack in the Lingayen Gulf. He rejoined his outfit after being hospitalized at Hollandia. His death came April 2, while advancing under sniper fire after the assault landing at Legaspi. The body will be taken to the home of his parents, 429 N. Clay St., upon arrival. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
Davis Services

Funeral services for Robert E. Davis, who was 22 years old when he was killed in action April 2, 1945 in the Philippines, will be held Saturday morning. Sgt. Davis was the son of John C. Davis, Ottumwa mail carrier and Mrs. Davis, of 429 N. Clay St. Rights will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the home and at nine o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic Church where a solemn Requiem High Mass will be celebrated by the Right Reverend Monsignor J. M. Walsh, pastor. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Military services will be in charge of the Walter B. Schafer Post, Number 775, Veterans of Foreign Wars, assisted by the American Legion and AMVETS. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the AMVETS Post Number 20. Active pallbearers will be Lee Roy Larson, Joseph Morrissey, Joseph H. Cross, Norbert Davis Jr., and William Davis. The body arrived at 3:15 p.m. today from Kansas City and was removed to the home of the parents. Members of St. Mary's Parish and the Holy Name Society will meet at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the home to recite the rosary. Robert was born January 7, 1923, in Ottumwa. He attended St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Catholic Central High School with the class of 1940.
