CENTERVILLE - Lucian B. Saums, 80, of Centerville, formerly of Unionville and Blakesburg, died at 3 p.m. Friday at the St. Joseph hospital in Centerville, where he was for eight days. He had been ill for two weeks. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Methodist church at Unionville and the Masonic lodge at Blakesburg. He was born July 31, 1863 on a farm in Davis county, the son of John and Mary Jane Saum. He ran a livery barn at Unionville for 13 years while a young man. He was married to Miss Jane Selix and to this union three daughters were born. He lived for many years on a farm south of Blakesburg, afterward moving to Blakesburg, where he was when his wife died December 1, 1921. He continued his home for a time at that place before coming to live with his daughter, Mrs. Floyd Whisler, Udell route, where he was until he came to Centerville about 12 years ago.
He recently had lived for two years at the home of Mrs. Mallie Ricker in Centerville. he was preceded in death by one sister and two half sisters. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Floyd Whisler of Udell, Miss Zola Saum of Nichols and Mrs. Glenn Wheeler of Colfax; three grandchildren, one half sister and one half brother.
The body was brought to the Miller funeral home here. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist church in Unionville, in charge of the Rev. James Walls, pastor of the church. Burial will be in Jay cemetery, south of Blakesburg, beside his wife.
