Dr. Richard C. Roush, 72, died Friday, August 1, 2008 at home in Ottumwa surrounded by his wife and six children.

He was born December 16, 1935 in Des Moines to Rolland and Kathryn Swan Roush.

He married Sylvia Roscum in 1959 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.

He graduated in 1953 from Corydon High School and in 1957 from the University of Iowa School of Pharmacy where he was affiliated with Phi Delta Theta Social Fraternity. He graduated from the University Dental School in 1963 and practiced General Dentistry in Pella for six years before continuing his education at Northwestern University where he received his Masters in Orthodontia Dentistry in 1971. From 1971 to 2000, Dr. Roush had an orthodontic practice in Ottumwa.

He served in the National Guard and later the Army Reserve for 35 years attaining Full Colonel status. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church serving as a Deacon, an Elder and Clerk of the Session. Besides being active in the Lord’s Cupboard, Ottumwa Fellowship of Churches and River Hills Health Clinic, he volunteered for three months at Ft. McCoy as Commander of the Dental Clinic. At age 70, he was recognized as the oldest accepted Volunteer.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia of Ottumwa; six children, Christopher of Rockford, IL, Joan (Jeff) Mallonee of Davenport, Lynne (Steven) La Rose of Plymouth, MN, Dr. Eric (Kim) of Urbandale, Susan (Dominic) Holmes of Alexandria, VA and Leslye (John) Liu of Margate, FL and 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dave.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lou Wollenberg officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

Open visitation begins 9 a.m. Monday, August 4, 2008 at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society or American Legion/ VFW.
