Rev. J. W. Lewis Dead

After an illness of four weeks with typhoid fever, Rev. J. W. Lewis, now the pastor of the M. E. church at Ottumwa, died last Sunday, at 12:30 p.m. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at three o'clock, and the body will be buried at Ottumwa. Rev. Lewis is well known in Newton, as he was pastor here for one time, and has visited our town numerous times since then. He was a brilliant, gifted speaker, and a jovial, pleasant man. He was quite prominent in Odd Fellows' circles and one year was the State Chaplain for that order. His wife, three daughters and one stepson survive him. Mr. Lewis was in Newton quite recently, and then he looked in miserable health. Never very strong, the fever was too much for his constitution to resist. The sympathy of many Newton friends is extended to the bereaved widow and children. ~ The Newton Journal, Wednesday, Sept. 7, 1898, page 3, col 5.
