OTTUMWA — Jack J. Adams, 81, of 700 W. Alta Vista Lot 136, died at 10:58 a.m. May 23, 2008 at Hospice House.He was born Oct. 25, 1926 in Booneville, Iowa to John Wesley and Flora Ross Adams. He married Helen Yeoman May 31, 1947 in Ottumwa.

A graduate of Eddyville High School in 1944, he attended Iowa Success Business School. He served in the Navy during World War II and had been a member of the Iowa National Guard.He worked for John Deere Ottumwa Works for 35 years, retiring in 1982. He managed and coached the Phillies team in Ottumwa Babe Ruth for 27 years, and later was president of Ottumwa Babe Ruth League. He and his wife enjoyed being Arizona “snowbirds” for 17 years after his retirement, and he also enjoyed golf, mowing yards and watching ballgames on TV. A special spot in his heart was watching his granddaughter play softball.He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion.

Surviving is his wife, Helen; a daughter, Cathy (Tim) Coker of Ottumwa; four grandchildren: Brad Coker, Angie Coker, Shelby Adams and Shauna Livingston; nine great-grandchildren; a special daughter-in-law, Debbie Adams Reynolds of Ottumwa; a sister, Retha Denning of Ottumwa.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gene Adams; seven sisters, Blanche Miller, Minnie Gilland, Maude Keil, Gladys Hepker, Doris Adams, Helen Lehman, Frances Gordon; and four brothers, Sam, Harold, Frank and Garrett Rysdam.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Gray officiating.Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.Memorials may be made to Hospice, 312 E. Alta Vista, Ottumwa, IA 52501.
