OTTUMWA — Shirley M. Howk, 75, of Le Mars, passed away suddenly Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at Cornerstone World Outreach in Sioux City, Iowa with Pastor Larry Gordon officiating. Visitations will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.Additional services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008 in the Reece Funeral Home at Ottumwa, with Rev. Paul Sponheim of Northgate Alliance Church officiating. Interment will be in the Shaul Cemetery.Visitations at Reece Funeral Home will be from noon until service time.Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars and Reece Funeral Home of Ottumwa.Expression of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.carlsenfuneralhome.com

Shirley M. Haines was born March 16, 1933 in Montezuma, Iowa to Theodore and Iva (Carter) Haines.Shirley graduated from Montezuma High School. She worked for several years for Northwestern Bell in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Shirley was united in marriage to Max E. Howk on Aug. 18, 1960 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa.Max and Shirley lived in Ottumwa for many years. Max passed away in 1994.

Shirley moved to Le Mars, Iowa in 2002 to be closer to her son, Micheal. For the last 18 months, Shirley lived at Park Place Estates in Le Mars.Shirley loved to give of her time and talents. She had volunteered as a reading helper with children at Wildwood Elementary School in Ottumwa and later at Franklin Elementary in Le Mars. Recently, she had been honored as a 1000 hour volunteer with the Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary in Le Mars. She also enjoyed volunteering at local nursing homes reading the Bible to residents. Shirley was an accomplished knitter and embroiderer and also enjoyed cooking and singing. She was very meticulous and detail oriented in everything she did.Her faith was very important to her, she loved the Lord. She enjoyed attending services at Cornerstone World Outreach.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Micheal and Linda Hutton of Le Mars; four grandchildren, Carlson Neff of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Corey Werner and his wife Tracy of Harrisburg, S.D., Jason Werner and his fiancée, Jennifer Michaels of Lorain, Ohio, and Alexander Keagan of the Quad Cities area; a brother, Clyde and Joan Haines of Homosassa, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Jolene Jones of Grinnell, Iowa and Vesta Howk of Ottumwa, Iowa; cousins, Bill and Joan Jory of Rockford, Ill. and Irvin and Katinka Haines of Pisquah Forest, N.C.; other cousins, nieces, and nephews; and the staff and residents of Park Place Estates.She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Iva (Carter) Haines; husband, Max in 1994; a grandson, Cason Hutton; a brother, Chet Jones; and a sister, Alma Sweger.
