OTTUMWA – Vee Moore Kenning died Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Good Samaritan Nursing and Rehab Center.She was born Nov. 20, 1914 on a farm east of Thornburg, Iowa to Samuel and Iva Bittinger Moore.

She attended Thornburg High School where she graduated in 1932. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught school in rural Keokuk County.

On Feb. 2, 1936 she married Paul L. Kenning of Sigourney. In 1942, she moved to Ottumwa to be near her husband who was serving at the Ottumwa Naval Air Station. During the war years, she worked at J.C. Penney’s, and later worked as a civilian clerk at the Alameda Naval Air Station in San Francisco when Paul was shipped to the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Returning to Ottumwa after the war, she and Paul began to raise a family, two children, Paula and Greg.While her children were in school, she served tirelessly in the PTAs and also as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. After raising her children, Vee worked for the Ottumwa Community School District as a substitute teacher and tutor.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Christian Women’s Fellowship, King’s Daughters, and also a member of various bridge clubs. She was an avid golfer and card player. She also liked to sew and spent hours of her “free time” sewing for family members and neighbors. Another keen interest was working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She had a remarkable gift for growing, developing and nurturing all living things.

Surviving is her daughter, Paula (Mark) Wolf of Littleton, Colo.; her son, Greg (Miriam) Kenning of Ottumwa; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Ian and Sydney; a great-granddaughter, Kelly; and her sole surviving sibling, her sister, Betty Smith of Anaheim, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Iva, her husband, Paul, seven siblings, Samuel Moore Jr., Keith Moore, Wilma Shaeffer, Lyle Moore, Louise Nelson, Kenneth Moore and Beth Wagner.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Sneller officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The family will be present one hour prior to the service Thursday. The family requests that memorials be given to the First Christian Church of Ottumwa.
