Mildred A. Essex 74 of Camalot Towers died at 6:20 p.m Aug. 5, at St Joseph Hospital.

She was born Nov. 13, 1903 in Ottumwa to Gert and Mattie Goehring Kirkhart and lived in Ottumwa most of her life.

She formerly owned and operated the Essex Rock Maple Shop for 15 years. She was a member of the First Baptist church, Eagles Auxilliary and YMCA and had participated in Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

She married Percy Essex Nov. 29, 1939 at St. Louis, Mo. He died in 1963.

Survivors: daughters Maxine Prattof Batavia route 2, Betty Short of Moss, TENN. and Faye Stratmatter of Spear, ILL,; a son Robert J. Hoffstatter of Chillicothe, ILL.;25grandchildren,
and 24 great grandchildren; a brother Jack Kirkhart of Fresno, CA.; and a sister June Parker of Ottumwa.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Chapel; the Rev. J. Wesley officiating the services. Burial will be at the Ottumwa Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Steve and Jeff Hoffstater, Bill Hurley, Jeff Davis, and Ken Streitmatter.

Memorial: Iowa Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
