OTTUMWA — Jack Vernon Chedister, 84, formerly of 1303 W. Finley, died Dec. 20, 2007 at Vista Woods Care Center.

He was born July 31, 1923 in Ottumwa to Harold and Dorothea Beggs Chedister.He married Mary Lou Major Feb. 20, 1944.

A 1942 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he was an Inspector Supervisor at John Deere Ottumwa Works for 34 years before retiring in 1982. He was a well-known softball player and avid bowler.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Chedister of Fairfield and Mark Chedister of Moline, IL; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren and one sister Carolyn McCreary of Albuquerque, NM.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; a brother, Don; a sister, Doris Fuller and a granddaughter, Jill Chedister Ruble.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007 at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Gray officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with Military Service conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.Open visitation begins 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m.Memorials may be made to Hospice or Nurses Fund at Vista Woods Care Center.
