Michael Songer, 38, Ottumwa
OTTUMWA – Michael Scott Songer, 38, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Ottumwa, died June 30, 2007 while camping near Palo, Iowa.

He was born Nov. 16, 1968 in Lincoln, Neb. to Tom “Butch” and Judy Abel Songer. He married Nickie Knight June 15, 1996 in Wapello County.

A 1986 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he was resident of Ottumwa most of his life and of Cedar Rapids for the past three years.

He worked for Professional Roofing in Cedar Rapids. His passions were cooking and fishing.

Surviving is his wife, three stepdaughters, April Tobeck, Falesha and Desiree Smith; a stepson, Lester Smith and three stepgrandchildren all of Cedar Rapids; his parents, Tom “Butch” and Judy Songer of Ottumwa; a brother, Thomas John (Brenda) Songer of Campbellsville, Ky.; a sister, Kelly Sue Rhodes of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Stateler officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Body found in Cedar River believed to be missing camper.

The body was discovered about 1:20 p.m. by deputies and county conservation officers, officials said. The body was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, where an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday. Linn County Sheriff Don Zeller said in news report.
