OTTUMWA — A brief service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2007, at Willamette National Cemetery for Hugh Hamley, of Portland, Ore. who died March 26 of respiratory failure. He was 79.

A luncheon and memorial service will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Tabor Heights United Methodist Church, 6161 S.E. Stark St., Portland, Ore.

Our father, our friend, Hugh, was born April 26, 1927, in Fond du Lac, Wis., to Laurence and Thelma Hamley. He married Joan Donnelly in 1963, in Springfield, Ill. They divorced in 2003, but remained friends. Hugh studied engineering at Iowa State University, earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Northeast Missouri State University, and a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Oregon. He served in the Navy and the Naval Reserve and is a World War II veteran. He worked as a draftsman for John Deere in Ottumwa, lowa, then moved to Eugene, where he worked as an elementary school teacher for seven years and for the state employment service for 13 years. He was active in Boy Scouts, the church, and an avid sailor of his San Juan 21. He was a very enthusiastic host and friend to numerous international exchange students over many years through the UO Friendship Family program.

Survivors include two sons, Micah Hugh (wife, Michele), and Joel Christopher, both of Portland, Ore.; brothers, Gordon of Albuquerque, N.M. and Larry of Fort Myers, Fla.; sister, Thelma Louise Thompson of Albuquerque, N.M.; his former wife, Joan Finney of Springfield, Ill..; and two grandchildren, Julian and Gaelen.
