Frieda Major, 89, Eldon

ELDON — Frieda M. Major, 89, of Eldon, entered into new life on March 29, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

She was born on April 14, 1917, in Fremont to Carol and Nelle Davis Finney. She married J. Kenneth Major on May 7, 1935 in Lancaster, Mo.; he preceded her in death on July 18, 2006.

She was raised and educated in Eldon, graduating from Eldon High School in 1934. She was previously a cook for the Eldon school system and later was the first cook for the Eldon Senior Meals. She was a member of the Eldon Christian Church, avid volunteer at the McHaffey Opera House in Eldon, strong advocate and supporter of her children. She was an avid quilter and really enjoyed working in her garden.

She is survived by her sons, Larry and Dick Major of Eldon and Walter (Buster) Major of Davenport; her daughters, Joyce Comer of Clarmore, Okla., Linda Durflinger, Keni Durflinger, Jo Eddy and Phyllis Baldridge of Eldon; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harley Finney of Medford, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her children, Shirley, Tommy and David Major; her brothers, Edwin, Wildon, Forrest, Dillon and Walter Finney; and her sisters, Dorathy Shelly, Alice Swinscoe and Elizabeth Finney.

Services will be Saturday morning, 10:30 at Eldon Christian Church with Pastors Pete Peterson and Keevan Koch officiating. Interment will be in Eldon Cemetery.

Open visitation will begin at 1 o’clock at the Kremer Funeral Home in Eldon with the family present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to McHaffey Opera House or the Eldon Senior Meals.

Active casket bearers will be Mike, Tony and Curtis Major, Casey Eddy, Jeromy Batterson, Jackie Comer, Levi Rupe and Steve Rosebrough.

Honorary casket bearers will be Alex Major, Cindy Elder, Suzanne Streeby, Gena Becker, Kelly Rudiger, Mandy Roseman, Shelli Deshler, Heather McGrath, Holly Kappel, Rikki Drewitz and Jonté Baldridge.
