Virginia Grimes, 90, Keota

KEOTA — Virginia Burton Grimes, age 90, of Apple Valley, Minn., formerly of Keota, died Monday, March 12, 2007, at the Augustana Health Care Center of Apple Valley, following a lengthy illness.

Virginia was born Oct. 28, 1916, in Higbee, Mo., the daughter of Thomas R. and Eunice Mae (Kennedy) Burton. Thomas had worked for Morrell’s in Ottumwa. In 1932 she and her family moved to Washington, where she was a graduate of Washington High School and Washington Junior College. In 1936 the family moved to Keota. Virginia was employed by the B.J. Byrne law office. On Dec. 19, 1937, she married D.M. Grimes. At that time, Virginia worked in the executive offices of C.D. Kirkpatrick of Walden Farms. Just prior to World War II, Virginia and D.M. opened Keota Spray Service where she kept the books and later started Grimes Decorating Shop in the same building.

In August 1969, Virginia married E.J. (Andy) Mormann at Kahoka, Mo. They lived in Davenport and Lakeville, Minn. Virginia was a member of the United Church of Faith in Keota, charter member of the Methodist Historical Society, 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the James McElwee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a 50 year charter member of Iowa AV T.T.T. She was extremely interested in young people. She taught a Sunday school class for many years, directed a junior choir in Keota and led a junior orchestra that played at the Methodist Sunday school. She also started a young people’s organization called the Tuesday Club that met every week to study the Bible and do crafts after school.

Survivors include a son, D. Jay Grimes and wife, Beverly of Gautier, Miss.; a daughter, Peggy M. McAloon and husband, Michael of Colfax, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Tom Mound, Bill Mound, Bret Grimes, Terry Grimes, Christopher Grimes, Lauren Grimes and Darin Grimes; four great-grandchildren, Derrick Grimes, Samuel Grimes, Jonah Grimes and Alex Grimes; and one sister, Voncile Burton Henderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husbands.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Rev. Bob Wollenberg officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2007, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota.

A memorial fund has been established for the United Church of Faith in Keota.
