PETER KITTERMAN

PETER KITTERMAN, born December 10, 1809, Franklin County, Virginia, to HENRY and ANNA (DANNER) KITTERMAN, was the youngest child and only two years old when his father died leaving his mother with thirteen children to raise by herself.

In 1820 the mother ANNA(DANNER)KITTERMAN moved her family to Harrison County, Indiana, and by 1830 the whole family except two sons, JOHN and ZACK, had moved to Clark Township, Perry County, Indiana.

In the late winter of 1832 PETER'S mother ANNA KITTERMAN died and PETER KITTERMAN and his brother ELIAS KITTERMN got power of attorney from the rest of the siblings and went back to Franklin County, Virginia to settle their mother's estate.

On 21 March 1833, PETER KITTERMAN married MISS ELIZABETH REDMAN, daughter of WILLIAM and SARAH (CLARK)REDMAN,early pioneers of Perry county, Indiana.

PETER was hired by the government to open a Blacksmith Shop in November of 1842 at Fort Sanford to service the army that would see to it that all the Indians were removed from the territory before opening day on May 01, 1843. The family went to Bureau County, Illinois in late summer to spend the winter with a brother, MICHAEL KITTERMAN and his family, who had setteled in that county in 1828.

PETER KITTERMAN would leave his family and the families of his brother ELIAS and two of his sisters POLLY and ANNA and go on to Fort Sanford and look the territory over so when the rest of the family arrived he could direct them to good fertle soil.

Here these four siblings would spend the rest of their lives.

PETER and ELIZABETH had four children born to them in Perry county and three more after arriving in Wapello County, Iowa. They were: LEONARD ANN; WILLIAM HENRY; ELIZABETH ANN; ELIAS CLARK; JOHN NATHAN; SARAH ANN and GEORGE PAUGH.

Peter owned 382 acres in Wapello County, Iowa. He was a Democrat.

On October 26, 1887, Peter died of Dropsy. Elizabeth his wife died December 14, 1891 and both are buried on their farm in the KITTERMAN CEMETERY.
