George/James Smith

My grandfather, George Allen Smith was born in Van Buren County October 31, 1871. On his marriage license he adds Upton P.O.
His father was James Smith. In your maps it shows a J. Smith residing in Section 8 of the Des Moines Township. Is that landowner James Smith? And would he use the Upton P.O.? Where can I find the land records to see if that is the family I'm searching for?
