Routes of travel in 1882

I am trying to make an educated guess as to how my immigrant family would have traveled from Baltimore to Van Buren Co in 1882. I suspect they took the B & O Railroad out of Baltimore to St. Louis or Chicago. But what would they have done next? Was there routine train travel between either or both of these cities to the Farmington area?
