1863 epidemic?

In my quest for the family of James H. DONALD and his wife,Mariah OTIS,I have discovered that at least three of their seven known children perished in May of 1863,probably in Union tp,Van Buren co,IA.(James and family were residents there).I suspect that Mariah may have been lost at that time,as well(due to James' second marriage in 1869).Can anyone tell me if there existed some sort of epidemic at that time,which would account for these untimely deaths?Most of the family was buried at Smith cemetery.Is there an index of the cemetery available?Thanks,Ron
