Augustus Whitlock

There is a GAR star flagholder on Whitlocks grave, but no mention of any service in the Civil war in his obituary. I did discover an augustus L. Whitlock who was a confederate soldier from a Virginia unit, might this be the cause of no mention of civil war service, or is this just a mistake in placing the flag holder????
