Vicki,

I'm quite certain he was the son of John Mendenall and Margaret Gonce, though some trees online (erroneously, I believe) identify him as the son of a Samuel Mendenhall and Sophia Gantz.

Note the interesting similarity between Gonce and Gantz; I wonder if Margaret and Sophia were sisters, and/or John and Samuel brothers? I have not been able to determine anything conclusive about John's parents, but I do believe Margaret was the daughter of Abraham Gonce and Mary "Polly" Vance. Some trees list Margaret as the daughter of Isaac Gonce (Abraham's twin brother) of Jackson County , Alabama, but he and Frances Wilson had a different Margaret who married someone else.
