Jacob Bechtel and Candis Hanawalt

I am trying to verify residency of Jacob L. Bechtel and his wife Candis E. Hanawalt in Birmingham, (Van Buren County) Iowa for the date of 1867. Since they resided in Ohio for the 1860 census and in Missouri for the 1870 census, I seem to be stuck. I have an image that Bechtel drew of a home in Iowa in 1867. I have a letter from 1865 stating that he was going to Iowa to take over the operation of a farm that belong to a deceased uncle, this could also be surnam Bechtel or perhaps Lehman or Miller. Can anyone give me a lead as to where to look? Thanks, Beth
