I have a newspaper Article (1937) which describes a meeting of the Log Cabin Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. The program was on antiques…specifically the daguerreotype. It references Mrs. Nettie Morse and Dr. James A. Randall. She was the great grand-daughter of James A. Randall (my 2nd great grand-uncle).

"…An interesting point brought out was that Samuel B. Morse, American inventor was at that time at work on his telegraph device, went to France to aid Daguerre in the development of the daguerreotype machine, and brought one back with him to America in 1840, from which time the machines were developed simultaneously in France and America…

Local connection with this most interesting feature was disclosed when it was learned that Mrs. Nettie Morse Mitchell, one of the members present, was distantly related to Smauel B. Morse. Mrs. Mitchell's grandfather and the inventor were cousins. Mrs. Mitchell had with her an original daguerreotype of Morse taken with his first machine.

Other antiques brought to this meeting by Mrs. Mitchell included a set of doctor's instruments once owned by Dr. James A. Randall, who practiced for many years in Birmingham. Upon Dr. Randall's death in 1868 at the age of 80, Bishop Nones of the Methodist conference delivered a funeral service on "The Death of the Righteous." Because Dr. Randall was held in such esteem among the fellow townspeople and church members, Bishop Nones had this funeral, sermon printed in pamphlet form and distributed among his friends.

The instruments included in this interesting kit of Dr. Randall's were seven bottles of medicine, tweezers, a cantilever tooth extractor which was s Victorian instrument of torture, forceps, a lancet for the purpose of drawing blood in a cure-all of any disease, and a pestle. Another interesting item was the tiny balance Dr. Randall carried at..."
