MOORE, COON

My ancestor John Moore was killed by Indians 26 Nov 1855. Do not know where he was buried. Was New Market Van Buren Co, IA. I am sure it was a few renigade Indians as the major Indian problem was over by then. The wife Catherine was partially scalped but she lived, her scalp never grew hair so she had to wear a wig, if you can imagine what sort of wigs they had then!! The daughter Mary was visiting with her three little children, two were babies. The other was a 3 year old - where were they when this happened, on the bed a sleep.?? No wonder Mary was frantic, she stood behind a door with a double bitted ax and swung it at Indians as they came around. She must have been out of her mind with worry. Catherine's brothers came in and rescued her and the daughter and children. One brother, John Coon was killed also that day and taken to MO to bury with other members of the family. John Moore possibly does not have a stone, but he is buried there in Van Buren Co. Mary and her children and her mother Catherine Coon Moore went back to Madison Co, OH and the next year moved to Warren Co, IL
