My dad graduated from high school in 1927. I remember him telling me of two jobs in particular he had during those years that followed that stuck in my mind. One was working for 25 cents an hour in a coal mine. Another was driving a truck for the road construction crew that put in the first hard surfaced road south out of Bonaparte. He said the construction company would work them 50-60 hrs a week but pay them only for 40 hrs. You didn't dare raise a stink as there were others standing in line for your job. He also worked on the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) crew who did a lot of public works projects. Part of the F.D.R. "New Deal" works program I think.
