Raymond P. Schlegel 1937-2017

Raymond P. Schlegel, 79, of Milton, IA, died April 21, 2017, at home. He was born September 6, 1937, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Aaron and Lillian (Lutty) Schlegel. He was married to Joanne Johnson on June 16, 1962, in Moline, IL.

Ray grew up in Pittsburgh and spent the first half of his adult years in Davenport, IA. After retirement, he and Jo moved to Milton. Ray had trained as a diesel mechanic in the United States Army and used his talent in his years of work at Linwood Mining & Minerals, Buffalo, IA, Dohrn Transfer, Rock Island, IL, and finally retired from McCarthy Improvement Co., Davenport, IA. He was a member of Oak Hills Gun Club, the Izaak Walton League, Russell-Strait Post No. 483 and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Ray enjoyed training his numerous hunting dogs, hunting, fishing, finding morel mushrooms and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife Joanne he is survived by a son, Steve Kazenske (Melody) of LeClaire, IA, a daughter, Paula Venema (Michael) of Des Moines, IA, a brother, Bill Schlegel of Pennsylvania, three sisters, Donna Farrell of Pennsylvania, Marie McDine of Delaware, Kathleen Nehilla of Pennsylvania, five grandchildren, Harmony, Amanda, Shayna, Dalton and Adrien, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, Nathan and Logan, and a greatgrandson, Jaykob.

In accordance with his wishes, his body has been cremated and a memorial gathering/luncheon to celebrate his life will be held at the Heritage Center, Milton, on Saturday, June 17, 2017, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

A special thank you to the staff at Hospice, Regional Home Health Care, Davis Co. Hospital and his granddaughter, Shayna, for all of the exceptional health, personal and spiritual care provided to him and the family this past year.
