STRICKLING, KINKEAD, OVERMAN, JOHNSON, STEWART, MURPHY

Sept. 27, 1824, Dr. Henry Strickling was born in Frederick county, Virginia, and died in Keosauquaq about 9 o'clock, Sunday evening, Sept. 22, 1901. He would have been 77 years of aged had he lived until Friday of this week, Sept. 27. In 1838 he moved with his parents to Belmong county, Ohio. There he commenced the study of medicine in 1844 and began to practice in 1848. He moved to Guernsey county, Ohio, in 1850 and came to Henry county, this state, in 1854 and to Van Buren county in 1855, locating at Winchester, going from there to Wayne county, Iowa in 1857, returning to Winchester the following year, locating on a farm a couple of miles south of Winchester in 1859 where he continued the practice of medicine. In 1861 he was elected County Judge and served two terms, studying law and being admitted to the bar during that period. He engaged latter in the grocery, boot, shoe and pottery business in succession, but returned to the practice of medicine in 1873, continuing it until his health prevented about a year ago. He was married to Mrs. Sarah A. Kinkhead, who died in Keosauqua, March 11, 1877. To this union eight children were born, five of whom are living, viz. Mrs. Beatrice Johnson of Ft. Madison, Joseph C, William J., and Mrs. Lydia Overman of Keosauqua, and Mrs. Evaline Stewart of Chicago, all of whom were present when he died. He married Miss Mary Murphy, Dec. 3, 1878, who, with one daughter, June, survives. The funeral was held at the residence at 2 o'clock p.m. Tuesday of this week, conducted by Rev. C.E. Perkins, and the body was laid to rest in the Purdom cemetery. Dr. Strickling will be greatly missed. He was a good man.
