Elzy Cheney was born in Harrison Co., Ohio, May 25, 1841, and died suddenly at his home in Pierceville, Iowa, January 15, 1904, aged 62 years 7 months and 20 days. In 1844 he with his parents moved to Lee Co., Iowa, where they resided about 8 years. Then removed to Van Buren Co., which has since been his home. He was the youngest of a family of ten children, all of whom, except two have taken their departure from this world. Alfred of Sperry, Mo., and Wm. H., who resides in Montana, still survive.

In 1862 enlisted in the 19th Infantry, Co. I. He served until the close of the war with honor to himself and his country. Being of a happy, jovial disposition he was always a favorite with his comrades. On January 16, 1873, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Cornelia Lowe, who, with their foster son, Rufus Roy are left to mourn their loss.

He was a tender and loving husband, a kind and indulgent father. He will be missed by a large circle of relatives and friends for whom he always had a kind word and pleasant greeting. He united with the M.E. church at Utica in the summer of 1895, and has since been a faithful and consistent member. The funeral was conducted by his pastor, Rev. W.M. Erskine, from the M.E. church at Utica, Sunday, January 17, 1904, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Dibble cemetery.
