The Venerable Merchant and
Banker Dies n the Town
Which He Helped to Found
Sixty-four Years Ago.

Edwin Manning died at his home in Keosauqua at 5:40 o'clock Friday morning Aug. 16, 1901, aged 91 years, 6 months. He was the son of Calvin and Desire Manning and was born in South Coventry, Conn., February 8, 1810. He lived on a farm and was educated in the country schools. Mr. Manning became tired of his life in Conn. and longed or more exciting scenes and when he became of age went west. After working for a time at Bethany, Penn. he opened a small store at Canton Corners, Pa. His next move was to St. Louis in 1836, then to Lexington, Mo. And not liking the slave trade came to Iowa, and in 1837 in company with four others laid out the town of Keosauqua in a beautiful location on the banks of the Des Moines, where he resided until his decease. In 1842 he was married to Sarah J. Sample and from this union were born two sons, Calvin and William, and a daughter Miss Anna G. Manning who live at Keosauqua. Mr. Manning's second wife who is still living was Miss Nannie B. Bryant. She was the mother of six children, three of whom are living. They are Mrs. Kate Parrott of Cantril, Stanley White and Craig Ives Manning of Keosauqua. All were present at the death of their father except Miss Anna G. Manning who was in the east at that time. Mr. Manning was interested in various banks and commercial establishments throughout the country and was considered very wealthy. He was highly in favor of advancement in educational lines, was a temperance worker, and a strong man physically, intellectually and morally.
