MEETS DEATH
Sebastian Hammes is Killed
Instantly at Davenport.
WELL KNOWN HERE
Body Cut in Two

Sebastian Hammes, known familiarly as Sam Hammes here, was killed at Rock Island, Sunday of last week and the news came here on Tuesday.

Mr. Hammes has been an employe [sic] of Meek Bros. As tailor for several months and only recently left for Muscatine. This was the last heard of him until his death was announced.

The story as we learn it is that Mr. Hammes, accompanied by a lady, was walking down the street and on reaching crossing, was struck by an engine which was backing to the depot for the regular run. The lady owes her escape to the fact that when Hammes was struck, his body brushed her aside and out of harms way.

The lady insists that no warning of the approach of the train was given, but the fireman declares to the contrary.

Hammes is said to have been quarling [sic] with his companion when the terrible accident occurred.

The tender trucks passed over the abdomen of the unfortunate man almost severing the body, one half lying outside the rails and the balance was wedged under the fire box.
