Horace Ayres Hamlin was born in New York state Feb. 5, 1840 and died May 6, 1907, aged 67 years, 3 months, and one day. He was united in marriage to Sarah J. Custer Feb 15, 1866, to them were born eight children, four boys and four girls, the eldest daughter dying two years ago last February.

He enlisted in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry August 3, 1861, and was discharged on account of sickness. He reenlisted in 8th Iowa Cavalry and was discharged in 1864.

He joined the Harrisburg Baptist church in 1865. He leaves to mourn their sad loss a wife, brother, and seven children and five grandchildren.

His brother, John, lives in Chicago; his son, Frank, and family live in Keokuk; his son, Fred, and family live near Fairfield, and the remaining children are at home.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon, May 8, Rev. Jones of the M. E. church officiating. The G. A. R. post was in charge of the exercises and escorted the remains of their comrade to the grave in Bonaparte cemetery.

One by one the veterans answer to their call on earth. Their numbers are rapidly decreasing. Each year at Memorial Day there are new graves to remember.

Mr. Hamlin has spent much of his life in the vicinity of Bonaparte and he has been an exemplary citizen, a faithful friend, and an honored and respected gentleman.

Mrs. Hamlin and family for the present expect to remain on the farm north of Bonaparte, which has been there [sic] home many years. Friends here join with the RECORD in extending sincerest sympathy to the bereaved ones.
