Henry Humphryes.
Mrs. Henry Humphryes received a telegram from her son, R.K. of Lead, S. Dak., Saturday morning giving the sad news of the sudden death of Mr. Humphryes. They were unable to get particulars on the sudden death until Monday non when the body came to Bonaparte accompanied by the son, R. Keith.
Mr. Humphryes was employed in the shops of the Homestake gold mine near Lead. While at work there Saturday, June 17, there was an explosion of a few caps which had just been brought out of the mine with a bunch of tools, etc. Mr. Humphryes was passing through the shop and was struck on the left side of the lower jaw by a small piece of something now supposed to be of the copper cap and powder. The wound made was very small and to it Mr. Humphryes paid no attention until his fellow workmen told him to go to the hospital and have it dressed. Soon afterward it began to swell and show symptoms of blood poisoning which on Thursday evening became violent and caused intensive suffering. He was taken to the hospital Friday morning and died there Friday night at nine o’clock.
The wound made was very slight but it is said that wounds made by the copper cap which are used in exploding powder are very dangerous.
Mr. Humphryes leaves a wife and three children: - Mrs. Frank Shinblom of Bonaparte, Mrs. O.R. Junkins and R. Keith of Lead, S. Dak. He was sixty-three years old February 20, and was born at Bonaparte.
He is the last of a family of six, viz. William, James, Henry, Mrs. Wm. Chapman, Mrs. Fred Radestock, and Miss Sallie Humphryes. Mrs. Radestock died on the same day and hour just eight weeks ago.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in charge of the Masonic lodge.
Bonaparte people extend sincere sympathy to the family in their unexpected bereavement. The members of the family at Bonaparte did not hear that he had been ill until after the dispatch came announcing his death. A letter had been written Thursday telling of his illness but it could not arrive until Saturday noon.
Mrs. O.R. Junkins was unable to attend the funeral on account of health.
