Funeral Mrs. Carpenter At Home, Church

Late Moingona Woman Was Active in Church Work.—Was worthy Matron of O. E. S.

Funeral services for Mrs Wood Carpenter were held Sunday afternoon, Sept. 22, at 2:15 p. m. at the Carpenter home in Moingona and 2:30 p. m. at the Moingona community church. Miss Lois Crawford, pastor of the Biblical college church, was in charge. Three hymns, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere”, “The Old Rugged Cross”, and “That Will be Glory For Me” were sung by Misses Opal Hartung and Florence Temple. Miss Lois Crawford read the obituary and led in prayer.

She also spoke briefly on the subject, “It’s a Grand Thing to be Saved”. The Rev. Walter Berggren, pastor of Polk City, preached the funeral sermon, basing his message on the 23rd Psalm. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Roy, George, Clel, Theodore, Laddie and Murray Carpenter. Mrs. Bernice Petterson, Mrs. Ed Jones and Mrs. Laddie Carpenter were in charge of the flowers.

Was Aged 65

Charlotte May Dutton Carpenter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dutton, was born in Harrison, Van Buren, Iowa November 15, 1874 and passed away peacefully after a long illness September 20, 1940 at the age of 65 years, 10 months and 5 days. She was born on a farm and at the age of ten years moved with her parents to Des Moines, Iowa, and there she was baptized and a charter member of the Asbury Methodist Church, Des Moines.

She was organist at this church at the age of 12 years. Her name if in the cornerstone of the church as organist when the new one, at that time, was built at Des Moines. She was a member of the Women’s Relief Corps at the age of 15 and was organist of that organization. She was united in marriage to Fernando Wood Carpenter, December 20, 1893 and then moved to Moingona where she had been a residenttill her death.

Mother of Five

To this union five children were born, Frank, Moingona, Iowa; Clarence, Berkley, Iowa; Mrs. Ray Bricker, Ogallala, Nebraska; Mrs. Clem Hartman and Mrs. James Kennedy of Des Moines, Iowa. There are 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She has also two sisters, Mrs. Ernest Fritz and Mrs. Will Osterland, and one brother, Will Dutton, of Des Moines, Iowa. All of these will miss ‘her loving ways and kind deeds greatly.

Active in Church

After moving to Moingona with her husband many can remember her in her Christian work, doing service and kind deeds to the church and the sick in the community. She was superintendent of the Moingone church 13 years at one time and six at another time.

She was pianist of this church and at other times filled this same pulpit, in the absence of a minister, besides teaching the Bible at summer camp meetings, and many other services concerning the church, as to the care of keeping up the church in all kinds of weather, and enjoying it because it being work of God. She was also worthy matron of the Eastern Star at this time.
