In the passing of Wm. N. Sherod, which occurred at his late home, Sept. 4th, 1909, from paralysis and heart failure, our community has lost another of its oldest and most respected citizens. He was born March 9th, 1829, in Carroll county, Ohio, where be lived until the spring of 1854, when he came with his parents, Amos and Mary Carnes Sherod, to Van Buren county, Iowa, and settled on the farm now owned by L. V. Sherod, three miles northeast of Mt. Zion. In 1882, he with his family, moved to their present home, about half way between Mt. Zion and Keosauqua, where he passed away at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 25 days. He was married on June 5th, 1858, to Miss Hannah Barker. To this union were born three children, two dying in infancy. This companion died March 26th, 1863. He was again married on January 19th, 1865, to Miss Elizabeth Barker. Eight children were born to this union, one dying in infancy. Charles O. was killed in Nevada. He is survived by his wife and seven children, viz, Henry Bordman, Zadia Jackson, Mary Syfert, Rosana Topping, Ella Forbes, Amos R. and Clayton D., also eighteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The earlier part of his life he belonged to the M. E. church, the latter part he was member of the Presbyterian church of Mt. Zion. For several years he was a member of the Masonic lodge of Winchester, Iowa. A good, kind husband, father and friend has gone. His death will not be mourned by his family alone, but by a host of friends as well. His funeral was held at the Mt. Zion Presbyterian church, Sept. 5th, conducted by Rev. J. E. Krenmeyer, who chose for his text John 11: 25-26. The funeral was attended by a very large and sympathetic number of relatives and friends. The remains were taken to the Miller chapel cemetery , where he was laid to rest with loved ones who are awaiting him on the evergreen shore.
