Herbert Williams

Mr. Herbert C. Williams, 68, New London, died at 12:53 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 1987, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

He was born June 11, 1918, at Cross Timbers, Mo., the son of Edward and Grace Coon Williams. He married Margaret Langston March 5, 1942, at Columbia, S.C.

He worked for the Northup Hatcheries and the Taylor Hatchery in Mt. Pleasant for 25 years. He later worked at the IAAP and the Mental Health Institute until retirement.

He was a World War II Army veteran and retired as a captain in the Army Reserve after serving 21 years. He was a member of the New London United Methodist Church, the New London Masonic Church, the New London Masonic Lodge No. 28 AF and Am(err) (where he was a past master), Kabba Shrine of Davenport, VFW Post No. 7641, Eagles Aerie No. 150, and the Bentonsport Improvement Society.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Connie Peterson, New London; and one son, Tim Johnson, Irving, Texas; two grandchildren and one great grandchild; a stepmother, Mrs. Pearl Box Williams, Sedalia, Mo.; one brother Edwin Williams, Raymore, Mo.; and five sisters, Loretta Harms, Lincoln, Mo., Evelyn Barb, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Ruth Barb, Warsaw, Mo., Gwendolyn Duncan, Oletha, Kan., and Betty Klein, Pittsburg, Mo.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at the Elliott Chapel in New London with the Rev. Herbert Gould officiating. Interment was in Burge Cemetery. Military rites by the New London V.F.W. were held at the gravesite.

Memorials for the research for infectious disease at University Hospitals or the United Methodist Church have been established.
