Joseph C. Winters

Joseph C. Winters, 48, former Keosauqua resident, died June 18 at his home in St. Louis, Mo. of cancer. Funeral services were held at Kreigshauser's West Funeral Home in St. Louis, June 23, with burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.

He was born at Pittsburg, Iowa Feb. 10, 1939 to Cyrus S. and Cecil R. Cox Winters. He attended rural school at Keosauqua and high school in Fairfield and Rock Falls.

After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Navy and spent most of his career in the Pacific Fleet. His tours included the USS Ammen, Taiwan, San Diego, Okinawa, Philippine Islands, three tours to Viet Nam, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., the NATO forces at Brussels, Spain and the recruiting service in St. Louis where he retired after 29 years of service. He was a Yeoman First Class at his retirement.

He was married to Margaret Klein and they were later divorced. He married Maxine Holt in St. Louis Dec. 31, 1985. She preceded him in death Nov. 1, 1986.

He is survived by his step-children, Patricia Holt, Jacke Lamb, Sharan Kleeschulte and Stanley Holt, all of Missouri; his sisters, Louise House of Keosauqua, Edith Richardson of Long Beach, Calif., Joyce Haugen of Marquette, Iowa, Marjorie Miller of Bellflower, Calif., Dema Gire of Fairfield and Connie Roland of McAllen, Tex.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Pat, his brother Bob and his wife Maxine.

A memorial was established for the Visiting Nurses Association of St. Louis and the American Cancer Society. Donations can be sent to his sister, Louise House.

Those attending the funeral were Sam and Louise House of Keosauqua, Dale House of Ottumwa, Amy House and Dema Gire of Fairfield, Ann Duff of Rock Falls and Cathy Fox of Waterloo.
