Mabel R. Westbrook

Mabel R. Westbrook, 84, of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee, died Sunday, July 12, at Cumberland County Medical Center following a heart attack.

Miss Westbrook was born on Aug. 16, 1902 in Pensacola, Fla., the daughter of the late Troy D. and Nora Wellborn Westbrook. He(her) father died when she was one and a half years old. Her mother later married Alfred A. Casady, Cantril, Iowa.

Miss Westbrook was educated in Iowa where she attended graduating in 1927. In 1939, she graduated from Columbia University with a master's degree.

Prior to going to Oak Ridge, Tenn., she taught for 17 years in Iowa. She subsequently taught for one year each at Berea and Asheville colleges.

Miss Westbrook went to Oak Ridge in 1944 from Milledgeville, Ga., where she taught girls' college. She taught in the Oak Ridge School system at Glenwood Elementary and Jefferson Junior High School and took part in a special Scarboro project. She retired in 1968.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Casady, with whom she lived; a brother and sister-in-law, A.J. and Kay Casady of Manhattan, Kan.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Casady of Iowa and Edna Westbrook of Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul R. Casady of Cantril and Edgar Westbrook of Washington.

The family request that any memorials be in the form of gifts to the Tri-County Adult Literacy Council, Oak Ridge, Tenn., or the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City.
