Nina Phelps

Mrs. Dewey (Nina) Phelps, 84, 609 S. Harrison St., Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1987, at 12:01 a.m. at the Henry County Health Center.

She was born May 7, 1903, at Salem, the daughter of Louis and Maggie Shelman Conard. On March 21, 1925, at Salem, she married Dewey Blake Phelps.

Mrs. Phelps was a member of the Harrisburg Baptist Church and was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. She had taught school four years before her marriage and was active in work with young people in 4-H, Farm Bureau and Rainbow Girls. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and active in the Legislative Ladies League and in 1968 she was one of five women selected by the Wallaces Farmer and was honored as a Master Farm Homemaker for the sate of Iowa. She was a member of Chapter A, T.T.T. and was a district committee woman for the Farm Bureau.

Surviving are her husband; son, Dewey Blake, Jr., Fairfield; daughter, Mrs. James (Carrel Jean) McLeland, Freeport, Ill.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandsons; one brother, Errol Conrad, Mt. Pleasant; three sisters, Mrs. Opal Meeker, Winfield; and Mrs. Refa Postel, Salem, Ore.

Her parents, one son, Donald, and one sister, Wilma Elgin, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Harrisburg Baptist Church north of Bonaparte. The Rev. Hugh Shiveley and the Rev. Ed Newman will officiate with interment in the Vale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Beatty-Wilkins Funeral Home. A memorial has been established for the First Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant.
