Robert Hughes

Robert D. Hughes, 69, of Sacramento, Calif., died of heart failure on March 31, 1986 at a hospital in Sacramento.

He was born August 19, 1916 near Bentonsport, to John Wesley and Martha Van Hyning Hughes.

On March 15, 1941 he married Echo Joyce Scott at the home of her parents in Gridley, Calif. Their first home was in Cameron, Calif. where he was employed in a creamery. For more than 40 years they made their home in Sacramento. He worked for various dairies and meat companies and later was a stock clerk for the State Employment Development Department for 11 years, retiring in the mid-1970's.

His youth was spent in the Bentonsport, Bonaparte and Keosauqua communities. He graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1934. He was an avid sports fan and played basketball and baseball on the various local teams until he moved to California in 1949. During the 1950's he played baseball for numerous teams throughout the Sacramento area.

Remaining are his wife Echo; two daughters, Trudie Litts and Roberta Reed, both of Sacramento; three brothers, Roscoe, rural Keosauqua; Reginald, Los Gatos, Calif.; Rex, Custer, S.D.; three sisters, Lulu Beggs and Lenora Peacock, Keosauqua and Louise Wolf, Fort Madison; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Russell, Roy, Rupert and Raymond; and two sisters, Lela Holmes and Lola Austin.

Funeral services were held April 3, 1986 in the 6th Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Sacramento with Bishop Keith L. Roberts officiating. Interment was in Mt. Vernon Memorial Park Cemetery, Sacramento.
