Ben Lewis Holmes

Ben Lewis Holmes, 77, 702 W. Stone Ave., died at 12:03 Thursday, Nov. 2, 1995, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Behner Funeral Home, with the Rev. Norman Channel officiating. Cremation will follow. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. Open visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Jefferson County Hospice.

Holmes was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Birmingham, the son of Elmer and Susie Kennedy Holmes. On Aug. 18, 1945, he married Hazel Maxine Hagans in Fairfield. She died July 15, 1995. A lifelong resident of Jefferson County, he had been a salesman for Bradshaw Furniture, Spurgeon's, and Hy-Vee Food Store before his retirement. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Free Methodist Church and Eagles Lodge 1927.

Surviving are two daughters, Charlotte Rusk of Batavia, Joan Baker of Ottumwa; a son, Roger of Fairfield; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Warren of Fairfax, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wendell, George and Glen; and a sister, E. Byrl McIntire.
