GrimesJerry Lee Blakley, 69, went home to Heaven on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, September 23. 2016, at Iles Westover Chapel. Burial will follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
Jerry was born May 30, 1947, in Oskaloosa, IA, to G. Lee and L. Lucille (Clark) Blakley. He attended Fairfield High School in Fairfield, IA, and he graduated from Vennard College in University Park, IA. Jerry served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was an ordained elder and pastor in the Free Methodist Church, and he was the owner of Jerry's Construction which operated in Fairfield, IA, and, in later years, in Grimes, IA. Last year he retired from working as a truck driver for Chadmark LLC. In 1995 he moved to the Des Moines area and joined Lutheran Church of Hope. Serving the Lord was his passion, and he could always find opportunities to share the love of Christ. His sense of humor brought joy to peoples' hearts. He enjoyed being outdoors, working in his flower gardens, riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, horseback riding, and hunting.
Survivors include his children: Lynn (Gary) Fryrear of Stronghurst, IL, Marlene (Wilson) Starnes of Fairfield, IA, Judy (Kevin) Waycaster of Waukee, Ted (Megan) Blakley of Ramsey, MN, Shirley (Cy) Winters of North Port, FL, Tom (Nina) Lisk of Murphy, TX; 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; siblings: Kenny Blakley, Marilyn Kelley, Carolyn Hartman all of Fairfield. Jerry was preceded in death by his sister, June Blakley, and, earlier this year, his wife, Darrilyn Blakley.
The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m., Thursday, September 22nd, at Iles Westover Chapel.
