Bernice A. Borders

Bernice A. Borders, daughter of Thomas A. and Maude Barker McIntosh, was born August 25, 1901 in the Center Chapel Community south of Keosauqua and died Oct. 30, 1985 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua, following a short illness.

As a small child she moved with her family to California and they returned to Mount Zion when she was 11. Following graduation from Keosauqua High School, she taught school in Van Buren County briefly and then moved to Des Moines, where she was employed by Equitable Life Insurance Co. In 1928 she married George E. Borders. They lived in Des Moines until moving to Bethesda, Maryland in 1940. Mr. Borders died in 1959, after which she returned to Keosauqua. She had been employed by the Veterans Administration while in Maryland and worked for a time in the Van Buren County ASCS office. Bernice was active in the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church and numerous other community activities.

In later years much of her effort was devoted to the care and assistance rendered toward several elderly relatives and friends.

Remaining to cherish her memory are a daughter, Mary Wolff and her husband, Henry, of Punta Gorda, Fla., a brother, Addison McIntosh, Fairfield, and a sister, Mabel Sanders and a sister-in-law, Hazel McIntosh, both of Keosauqua. Also surviving are nieces and nephews and cousins, to many of whom she was especially close.

A brother, Russell McIntosh and a sister, Ruth Ellsworth, preceded her in death.

She had donated her body to the University of Iowa Medical School. Following anatomical study the cremains will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial services will be held Friday, Nov. 15, 1985 at 2 p.m. in the Mount Zion Presbyterian Church north of Keosauqua, with Rev. Charles McCracken, officiating. Arrangements are in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua. Memorials to the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, Keosauqua Congregational Church or charity of donor's choice may be left at the funeral home.
