Harold S. Laughlin, Sr.

Harold Samuel Laughlin, Sr., son of Hugh Marvin and Nola Belle McGill Laughlin, was born December 27, 1896 in Van Buren County and departed this life the evening of Tuesday, March 19, 1985 at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield, where he had resided since 1981. He was 88.

On August 1, 1931 he married Katie McCurdy. They farmed in the Douds community and moved to a farm in the Cross Lanes Community near Batavia in 1939. In 1977 they retired to Fairfield. Katie passed away in 1983. Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Howard, Marvin, Leonard and Lester and a sister, Mabel.

Remaining are a son, Harold, Jr. and his wife Juanita in Saudi Arabia, a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lane and her husband, George, of San Antonio, Texas, four grandchildren Brian and Cindy Laughlin and Russell and Spencer Lane, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Harold was a veteran of World War I and had been active in veterans organizations. He was a published poet, and accomplished wood carver and furniture maker.

He had been an elder in the Cross Lanes Church and was First Presbyterian Church, Fairfield.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 23, 1985 at 2 P.M. at Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds, with Rev. Carl Riggs of First Presbyterian Church, Fairfield, officiating. Interment was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery north of Douds. Memorials were established for his church and the Cross Lanes Club.
