JOHN F. HARBISON

John Francis Harbison, son of William Wiley Harbison and Elizabeth Buglas Carrick Harbison, was born October 2, 1907 in Monroe County, Iowa and departed this life the morning of Friday, January 18, 1985 at Van Buren County Memorial hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 77, following a lengthy illness.

He graduated from Albia High School and Junior College and the University of Iowa and did graduate work at Parsons College and Southern Illinois University. He taught and coached at Parsons College and Wellman, Albia and West Waterloo High Schools, and served in the United States Army during World War II.

On August 5, 1932 he married Jan Babel at Trenton, Missouri. They moved to Keosauqua in December, 1945 where they operated a produce and grain business.

In 1962 John became a liaison and hearing officer for the Iowa Board of Patrol; for five years was personnel director at the Iowa State Penitentiary in For Madison, and then returned to the Board of Parole, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, Keosauqua Lodge No. 10, Ancient Free and Accepted Mason, Lynds Chapter No. 27 Order of Eastern Star, and Beer-Barker Post No. 113 American Legion. He served 12 years as president of the Keosauqua School Board, and was a charter member and past president of the Keosauqua Rotary Club.

Surviving are his wife, Jane, a son, Dr. John W. Harbison and his wife Carolyn of Richmond, Virginia, a daughter, Ann Gilchrist and her husband James of Park Forest, Illinois and a son-in-law Stanley Green of Des Moines. Also surviving are seven grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Susan Jane Green, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Harbison.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 20, 1985 at 2 p.m. in the Keosauqua United Methodist Church with Rev. Louise Spears officiating and military honors by Beer-Barker Post, American Legion. A Masonic service was held Saturday January 19 at 7 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home. Interment was in Fellows Cemetery. Memorials were established for his church and the Keosauqua Public Library Trust Fund.
