William "Percy" Slonaker

William Percy Slonaker, 72, of Birmingham died Dec. 24, 1985 at 10:26 p.m. at the Jefferson County Hospital.

He was born July 30, 1913 in Milton, the son of Homer and Ruth McCombs Slonaker. He graduated from the Troy High School in 1932, farmed for 24 years near Pulaski and south of Birmingham, moving to the farm south of Birmingham in 1950, where the family lived until 1962 when they moved into Birmingham. He owned and operated the Phillips 66 Service Station and tank truck for 18 years. He was employed at Parsons College Village Homes in Keosauqua, and Louden's Machinery Co. for four and one-half years. Before his retirement he was associated with the Birmingham United Methodist Church where he served as janitor for several years in the Birmingham Lions Club. He married Vera June Massey June 19, 1938 at Pulaski. She survives as do three sons and two daughters: Larry Slonaker of Birmingham, Janet Hampton of Ankeny, Linda Bradley of Wapello, Fred Slonaker of Lexington, Ky. and Terry Paul Slonaker of Jacksonville, Fla., 12 grandchildren and one great grandson and three sisters: Evelyn Wilkinson of Ottumwa, Mary Salters of Ottumwa and Elizabeth Powell of Cantril.

Funeral services were held Dec. 27, 1985 at 2 p.m. at the Birmingham United Methodist Church with Rev. Duane Olsen officiating assisted by Rev. David Kennedy. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham. Memorials to the First Responders of Birmingham or to the Birmingham United Methodist Church.

The Burch-Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham was in charge of funeral arrangements.
