Francis Steele

ELDON - Francis H. "Herb" Steele, 68, of Eldon died at 11:36 p.m. March 16, 1985, at Ottumwa Hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks.

He was born Dec. 5, 1916, at Cedar to William and Faye Black Steele. He spent most of his life at Eldon. He retired from John Morrell & Co. in 1972 and since then had been training race horses. He was a member of the Amvets, USTA, and the Iowa Hawkeye Colt Association. He married Alive Woodard on Sept. 30, 1939.

He is survived by his wife; his mother of Fremont; five daughters, Mary Alice Bickford of Selma, June Findlay of Marengo, Rebecca Howard of Batavia, Fay Boyd of Eldon and Joyce Steele of Eldon; two sons, Hubert A. of Eldon and Raymond T. of Cedar Rapids; 27 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Icyphene Steen of Agency; and four brothers, Frank of Ottumwa, Herman of Texarkana, Texas, Lee of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Gene of Floris.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell Funeral Home at Eldon, Dr. Ronald Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Eldon Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association.
