Robert Nordyke

Robert W. Nordyke, 62, of 521 E. Fourth died at 12:40 p.m. Feb. 19, 1985, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City.

He was born Oct. 19, 1922, in Jefferson County to Carl and Maude Smith Nordyke. A resident of Ottumwa since 1946, he was an employee of John Deere Ottumwa Works for 30 years, retiring in January of 1977. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded two bronze stars and a purple heart. He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post 3 of the American Legion, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 775 and a member of the fraternal order of the Eagles No. 114. He married D. Irene Rath on May 24, 1947, in Kansas City, Kan.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Gary W. of Charleston, S.C., and Terry Lee of California; a stepdaughter, Sharon Sisto of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; his mother, Maude of Abingdon; five brothers, David of Agency, Richard of Bonaparte, William, Ronald and Delbert, all of Abingdon; and four sisters, Grace Smith of Agency, Helen Johnson and Madeline Perkins, both of Seattle, Wash., and May Day of Fairfield.

The service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home, the Rev. Brace Oliver of the Gospel Light House Church in Batavia officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation is after 1 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established to the family.
