Bessie Gates

Bessie E. Gates, 84, of 407 Mer Rouge died at 11:43 a.m. Dec. 19, 1984, at Ottumwa Hospital.

She was born Sept. 4, 1900, in Coatsville to Harvey and Jennie Campbell Holton. She was a member of the Ottumwa Baptist Temple. She married William A. Gates on Dec. 22, 1923, at Lancaster, Mo. He died in 1961.

She is survived by three sons, Harvey and Phillip of Ottumwa and Frank of Simi Valley, Calif.; five daughters, LaVon Tennison of Ottumwa Route 4, Caroline Johnson and Joyce Gates of Ottumwa, Maxine Lighton of Keosauqua and Delores Brovage of Troy, Mich.; 33 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Myrtle Galpin of Ottumwa and Era Stiles of Tucson, Ariz. She was preceded in death by two sons.

The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Ottumwa Baptist Temple, the Rev. A.D. Pringle officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

The casket will remain at the Johnson Funeral Chapel until 11 a.m. Friday when it will be taken to the church.
