Orril E. Smith

Orril E. Smith, son of Charlie C. and Nellie Crane Smith, was born May 12, 1904 in Jefferson County near Lockridge and died early the morning of Sunday, Nov. 25, 1984 at van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 80.

His life was spent farming in Jefferson and Van Buren counties until retiring to Birmingham in 1980.

On May 26, 1948 he married Barbara Etta Haynes Pollitt at Keokuk. She remains with their three sons, Charles L. Smith, Douds, John G. Pollitt, Shell Rock, Iowa. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, a sister, Retha Nelson of Fairfield, a brother, Cecil Smith, Baraboo, Wisconsin, other relatives and friends. An infant granddaughter preceded him in death. In addition to their own family, Mr. and Mrs. Smith have made a home for more than 30 foster children. His kindly manner coupled with firm guidance has had a profound influence on the lives of these young people.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 27, 1984 at 2 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, with Rev. Phil Campbell, officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Birmingham. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
