Bertha McMillen

Bertha Belle McMillen, the daughter of William and Mary Margaret Purdom Cochenour, was born April 2, 1904 in Pike County near Waverly, Ohio, and passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 1984 at her home in Granger at the age of 90 years.

She married John Edgar Smith July 27, 1913 and he preceded her in death Aug. 1, 1936. She married Lester McMillen Feb. 17, 1939 at the Christian Church parsonage in Kahoka. He preceded her in death April 6, 1983.

Survivors include one son, Lawrence Smith and wife, Alice, of Granger; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Gonzales and husband, Bob, of Granger, Mrs. Edna Mae Robinson and husband, Ward, of Milton; three step-sons, Floyd McMillen of Revere, William George McMillen of Charles City, Iowa and Fredrick Raymond McMillen of Norfolk, Virginia; one step-daughter, Mrs. Stuart (Alberta) Wood of Kahoka; one brother, Frank Cochenour of Luray; three sisters, Mrs. Verna Trammell of Enid, Oklahoma, Mrs. Roy (Ada) Gundy of Sedalia, Mo., Mrs. Bill (Stella) Roach of Sulphur Springs, Ark., eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 23 step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Frank and James Smith, one step-son, James Edward McMillen, four brothers, Harley Andrew, [r] and Clarence Cochenour, five sisters, May Skoog, Myrtle Grubb, Lula McCabe, Ella Marie Cochenour and Mary Alice Cochenour.

Bertha's family came to Missouri when she was four years of age. She attended school at Morning View west of Arbela and Union School in Clark Co. north of Luray. She was a member of the Granger United Methodist Church. She had celebrated her 90th birthday in April with a celebration hosted by her family.

Services were held on Thursday, Aug. 9, 1984, 10:00 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Chapel. Revs. Bruce and Peggy Jeffries officiating.

Interment was in Granger Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.
